Youre NOT Doing Enough as a Freelance Writer

I havent landed a writing job yetwhat gives? Ive pitched soooo much, but havent heard back from any of them!!! Why? I spent hours on my writer website, but still, no gigs! Does any of these sayings sound familiar? Like you couldve said them yourself (or have thought them in the past)? Did you know that after the first year of freelance writing, the majority of writers fail? They stop freelancing for good and never go back. (A unicorn died when I learned this!) Being a freelance writer is also being an entrepreneur, and as an entrepreneur, youre going to face extreme highs and big lows. But, thats one of the reasons I LOVE freelance writing! I get to create those big highs if I wanted to and I can mitigate those lows, so they dont affect my bottom line. So, if you just started freelance writing as a beginner, I dont want you to feel defeated or frustrated because you havent landed your first gig. I want to help you because I suspect part of the reason you arent succeeding is that you dare I say it? arent doing enough as a freelance writer. *gasp I knowsounds harsh, doesnt it? Of course, youre doing all that you can! Of course, you only have 1 hour a day to make this work! Of course I know Straight talking here it is possible to make a living as a writer. Im doing it and have been doing it for five years. But, if youre already thinking of the donts instead of the dos, then youre setting yourself up to fail anyways. So, lets turn that around and get you that first freelance writing job. Ill share with you what I feel youre not doing enough and how you can incorporate that in what little time you have to devote to your side hustle. What Freelance Writers Arent Doing Enough Of 1. Youre NOT Pitching Enough One of the biggest ways you can improve your chances of landing your first writing gig is to pitch more often. Many writers that start out send around 200 pitches or less before they land a good gig. Other writers land their first gig immediately. There really is no right amount of pitches to send before you land a gig (I sent around 50 before I landed my first gig). But, if you dont hear back from the pitches you ARE sending, try sending MORE pitches. A good rule of thumb is: 10 pitches a day for 10 days. Whats great about this tactic is that you set a time frame 10 days and the amount you send per day 10. You can adjust this to fit your commitment, but the only thing I suggest is you extend the time frame if you end up lowering the number of pitches you send 5 pitches a day for 15 days. You can also change the format of what a pitch entails. For example, you can also include guest post pitches or podcast pitches along with your job ad pitches and cold pitches. 2. Youre NOT Available Enough Watching Youtube and relaxing! Did you know that I hire ghostwriters and bloggers to help me with my other blogs? Most of the freelance writers are professional and available, but theres always those few that I have a hard time contacting them or they never reply to my emails in a sufficient time frame. When that happens, I dont hire them. I need a reliable and available writer. This doesnt mean you should be at the beck and call of your clients; instead, be prompt when responding to emails 24 to 48 hours is sufficient. This allows for time changes with your clients or potential clients, as well as for the weekend (if you dont email on the weekend which is something I WOULD recommend for new freelance writers). See, my thing is that I want to remove as many barriers as possible for someone to hire me. So, I do my best to reply to leads as soon as they land in my inbox. And you should too! 3. Youre NOT Flexible Enough As a new freelance writer, you have to be open to expanding your niche or services. If youre dead set on writing about history, it might be hard to find the right client. Why not peruse job boards and see whats out there? Pitch to ones that are remotely interesting to you. This is what I did, and it served me well. This can also help you pick up your first writing gig much quicker when you expand your freelance writing niche. How do you expand your freelance writing niche? Look at related topics in that niche. For example, if you want to write about cryptocurrency, you should also be willing to write about home loans or investments. If your niche is mental health, why not also include mindfulness and exercising as topics? By, doing this, you can search for more freelance writing jobs and get a gig! The same goes for your services. Why not add editing or social media graphics as added services to your freelance writing? Prospects who land on your hire me page will see all you offer and may start you out as their editor, and from there you can pitch your writing after you know the client enjoys your editing relationship. 4. Youre NOT Negotiating Enough Sometimes the issue for freelance writers isnt that they cant find a job; its that the job is low paying. *think content mill rates! You can easily change this around by being firm in your negotiations. Try not to bend if a potential client says in their email: That rate is out of our budget. Can you cut your rate in half? Ouch! Some people! Forget what they say and be professional when you respond, Thanks for letting me know, but my rate is (x). If you need a professional writer later on or if your budget increases, feel free to contact me! Boom! Whos the boss now? Standing your ground will give you confidence, and you know what? That will carry with you on your next pitch, and I wouldnt be surprised if you didnt land that gig! The only time I would write for a lower-paying gig is if it can benefit me later one. For example, if the networking potential is greater than the actual gig. Or, if the gig sounds super fun and super easy and it would look good in my portfolio! 5. Youre NOT Reaching Out Enough Many freelance writers think this is a competition and its not! Instead of giving the stink eye to other freelance writers, connect with them and follow them! Share their blog posts and sign up to their email list! Networking its creeping up again! is soo powerful! It is what can increase your income and move you up the income ladder. By doing this, you will see other freelance writers giving away potential gigs if they have a full schedule. Similarly, if youre booked up, you can connect with your list of freelance writers and see if they want to pick up another writing gig. Some of my best freelance writing jobs came from other freelance writers or from their referral! So, how can you connect with more freelancers? Follow them on Twitter Follow them on LinkedIn Join Facebook groups and search for freelancer And connect with other freelancers like graphic designers and coaches! Maximize Your Time as a Freelance Writer What if you have NO time to start this freelance writing business? What if you only have one hour a day or three hours a week to do this? First, list out the most important tasks you need to accomplish: Create three writing samples Pitch 5 times a day for 10 days Start a Twitter profile and follow 10 freelancers Find five companies to cold pitch to Create a pitch template Once you write down your list, next write out how long you think each task will take and plug that into the time you have during the week. This will give you a framework to work off of. You also should get creative on your time. Instead of vegging out after dinner watching your shows, pitch or find businesses to cold pitch to. You might have to nix Netflix for a month to land a few clients! Totally worth it though, right? If you still find this difficult to execute, why not have an accountability partner? It doesnt have to be your husband or wife or a friend; it can be another freelance writer you connected with on Facebook! On the insistence of local populace and many environment protectionists that they do not want incinerator any further, municipal council agreed to take the stock of the situation. Since 1994, bottom and fly ash from incinerators were used in preparing path material in and around Newcastle and total materials used were to the tune of 2000 tonnes. Initial tests showed presence of heavy metals and on public demand the Council agreed to carry out further testing at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Taking 1995 as baseline, the first step reduction is set at 25% by 2010, second step at 50% by 2013 and last step at 65% by 2020. Due to this reason many municipal authorities take the stand that incinerator is necessary to meet the norms under the directive but the argument is not acceptable for several reasons. (Landfill Directivesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦p 8) If just 30% of newspaper, card and organic wastes, are recycled, it is possible to meet the first target as required by the directive in reducing biodegradable waste going to landfill. This and future targets can certainly be achieved with the systems and technologies that are currently available. It should be noted that targets are only for biodegradable waste. Government estimates itself tell that 60% of the current waste is biodegradable so in a sense there is no difficulty in meeting the government norms with regard to landfill targets. Though, it is necessary to decrease the amount of waste going for land filling but it is not at all necessary to use incinerator for the purpose. Several towns such as Canberra in Australia by 59%, the city of Edmonton in Canada by 70% and the towns in New Zealand and USA have successfully achieved reductions in land filling up to even 70 percent without resorting to any incineration technology. This has been achieved by them in a short span of 5 years. As such, most of the people in the industry have the view that 60% is quite realistic target for reduction in landfill by recycling and other methods. (SELCHP INCINERATOR, p 5) This can otherwise be achieved through skillfully designed methods and techniques as laid down in the following plans. An efficient collection and composting of garden, kitchen waste is the first step in this process to meet the recycling targets and Landfill directives. The domestic stream materials separation needs some basic infrastructure and that can also be used for recyclable material from trade and similar streams. The source separation of waste is critical step in waste reduction programme. It can be separated in three streams. A. Dry Stream B. Compostable Stream C. Residuals Oil, light bulbs, paint pesticides will not be included in the municipal waste stream. They will have separate collection points at appropriate locations. Wet Organics-Stream 1 Subsequent to separation, Composting will be the next step towards waste management. Organic material causes major environmental issues and its separation reduces the toxicity level for it eliminates organic acid which dissolves heavy metals and cause the leaching. Organic waste constitutes about 40 percent of the household waste. Taking away the full range of organic materials along with dry recycling reduces the volume and odour causing potential of the residual stream. Is technology a boon or a bane Essay

Technology offers us an escape to inconvenience and makes work lighter and provocative. Personally, technology gives me a lot of benefits. Tasks get lighter, distance gets shorter, communication gets faster, to reiterate some. In my field of work, I use MP3 attached to a speaker to play the songs I want to teach the kids; having said that, I always make sure that I know the song really well that in case of some technical difficulties like interruption of electric power supply or empty batteries, I can still teach the song without using my MP3. Same case when I’m using PowerPoint Presentation. I always have backups. Though technology makes our lives easier, as a teacher we are still reminded that technology will not reach the inner soul of the children. We need to look them in the eye while presenting the lesson through the projector. We need to hold them when we present the sense of touch. We need to utter the words to them when we want them to understand and truly learn the lesson.

Brian Billick

No one understands success better than Brian Billick. It is not because of his own achievements which include leading an NFL team to a Super Bowl victory, it is because leadership fascinates him. One of Brian’s most noted feats was leading the Baltimore Ravens to a 34-7 win over the New York Giants in the 2000 Super Bowl XXXV. Making the victory so much more rewarding was the fact that Brian took over the role as head coach for the Ravens a year earlier when they were ranked as one of the NFL’s most depressing teams. Two words are synonymous with Brian Billick – passion and accountability.Those two traits are what steers a person to success. Brian was born in Ohio but his family moved to California. He learned success early as an athlete at Redlands High School where he played both football and basketball. He etched his name into the state record books with 21 career interceptions, a record that has yet to be broken. Following high school, Brian was a freshman li nebacker at the Air Force Academy before transferring to Brigham Young University where as a tight end, Brian earned an honorable mention in the 1976 All-America honors. He also earned a Bachelors Degree in Communicationsand currently endows a communications scholarship at the university. In 1977, Brian made it to the National Football League. He was picked in the 11th round of the NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers and then traded to the Dallas Cowboys. However, as a player, Brian never got the opportunity to hit the field. Instead, he was hired as the assistant director of public relations for San Francisco for the next two years. He spent much of the 1980s coaching college teams such as San Diego State University, Utah State University and Stanford University.â€Å"BRIAN BILLICK† Page 2 As a coach, he quickly learned there is no â€Å"I† in team and that was something he instilled in each player. To Brian, coaching is more than teaching the plays of the game, it i s teaching the values that make a team player. The success of a team is determined by working together towards a common goal. Each player must have the passion. As with any goal, reaching it requires 100 percent dedication. If a person can not commit to every aspect that comes with the territory then they lack the passionneeded to survive. The other important influence in a successful team is accountability. The task requires working together without selfishness but a person must also be willing to take responsibility for one’s actions. Brian feels it is a sign of respect for the team. Brian practices what he preaches. He joined the Ravens in 1999 and led the team into post- season playoffs every year since except twice and he takes accountability for those two years. As the team’s leader, he felt responsible but it did not discourage him from finding new ways to guide the team in the right direction.Throughout his career, Brian earned the reputation of being more than just a great leader but also a motivator. He knows the values that make a person a leader are something that can be taught. Bringing out those qualities in a person by influencing their behavior, attitude and actions are what leadership is all about. Brian began his NFL coaching career with the Minnesota Vikings in 1992 when he was first hired as the tight end coach and by the following year, he was named offensive coordinator for the Vikings. His leadership skills brought out success in the Vikings’ camp and in 1994, the teamcaptured the NFC Central title. He remained with the Vikings until the end of the 1998 season. â€Å"BRIAN BILLICK† Page 3 In 1999, he was hired as head coach of the Baltimore Ravens. Basically a new franchise founded four years earlier, the Ravens were struggling as a team. In Brian’s first year as coach, the Ravens won eight games. That was more wins than they had totaled in their first four years. The Ravens’ defense finished sec ond overall in the NFL.In his second year with the team, Baltimore finished 16-4 overall in the 2000 season. They crushed their opponents in the playoffs and became only the fourth wild card team to go on to win the Super Bowl when they blew by the New York Giants. But domination had little to do with it. That October, the Ravens were on what looked to be a downward spiral when they failed to score a touchdown in five consecutive games. It was Brian who kept the team unified and focused on the primary goal. The team returned to the Super Bowl in 2001 but fell short when they lost 27-10 against thePittsburgh Steelers. That was still a remarkable feat considering they were one of the youngest teams in the NFL with 19 rookies that season. In 2003, Brian put the young team back in the playoffs. They led the NFL in rushing and ranked third in the league in defense. The next year, the Ravens were one game away from making the playoffs. The 2005 and 2006 seasons were disappointing for the Ravens but things may turn around in 2007 since they hired five new coaches to the franchise. Brian’s leadership skills have an impact on more than just his players. In the seven years thathe has been head coach of the Ravens, three of his assistants have moved on to become NFL head coaches. In 2001, Brian’s defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis joined Cincinnati and his linebacker coach Jack Del Rio joined Jacksonville. Three years later, he lost another defensive coordinator, Mike Nolan, to San Francisco. â€Å"BRIAN BILLICK† Page 4 It was shortly after winning the Super Bowl in 2000 that Brian, along with Dr. James A. Peterson wrote the book: Competitive Leadership: Twelve Principles for Success.This book talks about the keys to being successful and being a leader, not only on the football field but in life in general. The book also talks about how leadership is not about authority. Being a strong leader is being willing to always learn more and not think you al ready have all of the answers. An important key in any leader is the ability to ask questions. It is not about being perfect, it is about being effective. Brian also spends a large majority of his time speaking to corporations about leadership skills. Brian also spends time improving the community and doing his part forcharities. NFL Hall of Fame coach Bill Walsh joined Brian and Dr. Peterson in writing the book: Finding the Winning Edge. This book focuses more on football and is a guide for developing a winning NFL team. Despite his coaching schedule, charity work and public speaking engagements, Brian still finds enjoyment in studying leadership. Whether it be from hands on experience on the field or from the history of past leaders, learning builds an effective leader. Brian values education and it is interesting to note that he was once a contestant on the game show Jeopardy and The MatchGame in 1977. At age 53, Brian continues to help others build the characteristics needed to succeed. Along with the success comes the ability to be a leader, a teacher, a coach and a mentor. All of the qualities that make a person strong enough to take on that role can be learned through motivation. Hamlet, a prince of noble birth, only sees the negative side of life. He feels the world is a place full of corruption with distorted people living in it. Because his moral standards are so high, he avoids all human contact and isolates himself from people. Pip on the other hand, was born in a low social class, and was ambitious to become a gentleman. This ambition drives him to alienation from lower class people. His selfish and greedy behaviour caused him to abandon the forge, which symbolizes the human warmth he once had. In this essay, I will compare and contrast some points where alienation is present in both Pip and Hamlet due to their flaws, sufferance, circumstances and influence of corruption around them. Both Pip and Hamlet have human flaws and weaknesses. Pips weakness, however, is more self-directed. He has a desire to become a gentleman. He felt that this would be a road to his happiness, to escape his lowly birth. Great Expectations was set in early Victorian times in England, where there was a wide gap between social classes. Pip wanted to be looked up to, just like the other upper class gentlemen. He therefore adapts to the strict rules and expectations that governed Victorian England. Pips ambition begins to dominate over him, which results in him abandoning Joe, Biddy and the forge. He feels that becoming a gentleman would fulfill him. This desire is somewhat linked to his obsession with Estella. Estella, being part of a higher social class, makes Pip feel inferior.
